Dr. Marilyn Immoos-Langlois, Ph.D.

About

Dr. Marilyn Immoos-Langlois is a clinical psychologist, musician, composer, educator, and the sole developer of Mindful Breathing with Music (MBM). Her work brings together more than four decades of experience in psychology, music, mindfulness, breathing, voice, and embodied approaches to self-regulation.Her academic background includes psychology studies and a Master’s degree from the University of Innsbruck, followed by a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Vienna. Prior to her psychological training, she pursued advanced musical education at the New England Conservatory and the Mozarteum University Salzburg, forming the foundation for her work as a classical singer, composer, conductor, and music educator. The roots of MBM extend back to the mid-1980s. During work and training in analytical music therapy at the Psychiatric University Hospital Basel, (Psychiatrische Universitiaetskrankenhaus Basel)  Dr. Immoos-Langlois developed Resonance Therapy, an interdisciplinary approach integrating breathing, voice, imagery, music, and embodied attention. This work was later presented internationally and further developed through the Center for the Psychology of Voice in Zurich, which she founded in 1991 and directed until 2003.

After relocating to the United States in 2003, she completed postdoctoral training at California State University, Sacramento and continued refining her work with breathing, vocalization, guided imagery, mindfulness, and self-regulation. Over subsequent years, these approaches were applied and adapted in clinical, educational, governmental, correctional, organizational, and wellness settings.Dr. Immoos-Langlois later served for more than two decades as a psychologist with the State of California, including more than twenty years as a Clinical and Senior Psychologist Specialist with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Her work included developing a statewide psychology internship program and extensive continuing-education resources for mental health professionals, as well as contributing to wellness, mindfulness, self-care, and burnout-prevention initiatives.Mindful Breathing with Music emerged from this longer developmental trajectory. MBM is a structured, secular wellness method that combines a brief guided breathing narrative that is followed by  original piano music. Rather than imposing a fixed breathing rhythm, the method encourages participants to notice and follow their own breathing patterns, supporting individualized pacing, autonomy, and a non-performative experience. All music used in MBM is composed by Dr. Immoos-Langlois specifically for the method, allowing the musical structure, pacing, and character to be developed in relation to the breathing and attentional components of each practice.Today, MBM represents the integration of Dr. Immoos-Langlois’ longstanding work across psychology and music: a clear, accessible approach designed to support mindful attention, physiological settling, and recovery from everyday stress without requiring previous experience with meditation, breathing practices, or music.
